From October 16th to 18th, the Belize Medical and Dental Association (BMDA) proudly hosted its 42nd Annual Medical Congress under the powerful theme:
“Beyond Barriers: Uniting for Bold Public Health Solutions and National Wellness.”
Held at the scenic Old Belize in Belize City, this year’s Congress was more than a gathering of professionals—it was a renewed commitment to public health innovation, cross-sector collaboration, and equitable wellness for all Belizeans.
A Congress Rooted in Urgency and Unity
In a time when global and national health systems are being tested, the Congress served as a vital space to reimagine solutions to Belize’s most pressing healthcare challenges. From maternal mortality to climate change’s effect on child health, each session highlighted the urgent need for bold, coordinated, and forward-thinking action.
Throughout the three days, physicians, dentists, public health experts, and policymakers came together with one shared mission: to build a healthier, more resilient Belize.
Spotlight Sessions and Key Themes
🟠 Day 1: Maternal & Child Health
The Congress opened with deeply insightful presentations addressing maternal mortality, cardiovascular health in pregnancy, pediatric vaccinations, and the elimination of mother-to-child disease transmission. Experts such as Dr. Natalia Largaespada Beer and Dr. Ana de la Garza shared regional perspectives and forward-looking strategies.
🔵 Day 2: Strengthening Health Systems
Day two expanded into critical areas of public health infrastructure, cancer care, infectious diseases, and emergency medicine. Presentations tackled everything from radiology pathways to dengue management and integrated care for HIV and TB. The message was clear: investing in system-wide preparedness and primary care saves lives.
🟢 Day 3: Specialized Care & Social Health
On the final day, focus shifted to reproductive health, pediatric care, and mental health—topics often underserved but crucial to national wellness. Particularly powerful was the session on psychological first aid for families of children with cleft conditions and adolescent reproductive rights, led by Hon. Dolores Balderamos Garcia.
More Than Medicine — A Movement
This year’s Congress wasn’t just about medical updates. It was a call to action. Presenters emphasized the interconnectedness of health with environment, education, gender equity, and governance. Breakout sessions encouraged dialogue across disciplines, and attendees left inspired to take real steps toward creating sustainable health systems in Belize.
The event closed with a sense of purpose and solidarity—and a commitment to continue what was started: moving beyond barriers toward national wellness.
