The Belize Constitution (Chapter 4, Revised as of May 6, 2021) establishes Belize as a sovereign democratic state and the supreme law of the land. It guarantees fundamental rights and freedoms, outlines citizenship laws, and defines the structure and powers of the Governor-General, Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary. It also provides for public service commissions, finance management, and a code of conduct for public officials. The Constitution enshrines democracy, equality, social justice, and the rule of law, protecting citizens’ rights to life, liberty, property, and freedom of expression, conscience, and association

The Medical Practice Act (Chapter 318, Revised Edition 2020) establishes the Medical Council of Belize to regulate and license medical practitioners, set professional and ethical standards, and oversee registration, discipline, and recertification. It defines medical practice, outlines qualification requirements, and enforces compliance to ensure professionalism and quality healthcare in Belize.

The Belize Medical and Dental Association (BMDA) Articles of Association (2021) outline the governance, membership, and operational rules of the Association under the Companies Act, Chapter 250. They define eligibility for licensed medical and dental professionals, set annual fees, and regulate meetings (including virtual ones), elections, and director responsibilities. The Board consists of a President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Executive Members serving three-year terms, with limits on consecutive re-elections. The Articles also cover financial management, the Association’s seal, and auditor appointments, effective August 1, 2021.

The Medical Practice (Medical Practitioner Fees) Regulations, 2023 set new registration, annual, and service fees for doctors in Belize—ranging from $200 to $500 depending on citizenship and specialization—and impose penalties for late payments, replacing the outdated 1995 fee regulations.
