The Belize Medical and Dental Association (BMDA) is a professional organization representing registered medical practitioners and dentists in Belize. It was established in 1964 to promote high standards of medical and dental practice and support the professional development of its members.

BMDA was founded in 1964, the same year Belize attained Internal Self-Government. A group of pioneering physicians and dentists came together to maintain professional standards and improve the quality of healthcare for Belizeans.

The first president was Dr. Salvador Awe, a highly respected dentist in Belize City.

BMDA organizes regular CME events, including lectures, presentations, and an annual Medical Congress—a two to three day program featuring international and regional experts, aimed at updating local practitioners on best practices and new developments.

Yes. The BMDA has been instrumental in:

  • Reforming the Medical Registration process in 1982
  • Helping establish the Medical Council of Belize (MCB)
  • Proposing amendments to the Medical Practitioners’ Registration Act

Adopted in 2007, the BMDA Code of Ethics outlines professional standards and ethical guidelines for members. It was developed after extensive review of similar codes across the region.
